Lying next to the Caspian Sea and at the foot of the Caucasus mountain range, Azerbaijan, compared to Armenia and Georgia, is perhaps the most avant-garde. Baku, the capital city, houses the modern elegance of the Flame Towers along with its medieval UNESCO listed old city. Wander through the labyrinth of narrow alleyways in the old city and be sure to visit the national’s emblem – Maiden Tower, a UNESCO protected site.

A short drive away from Baku lies Gobustan where an astonishing collection of over 6000 ancient petroglyphs carving chart the way of life dating back tens of thousands of years. Close to Gobustan, we’ll find some astonishing mud volcanoes and the ever-burning fire at a Zoroastrian Temple and the natural gas burning site that’s been burning since 1950s at Yanar Dag on the Absheron Peninsula, that probably gave Azerbaijan its name as the land of fire.
