10 DAYS WILD CONGO & LOWLAND GORILLAS
Brazzaville, Ndzehi Concession, Lango Bai, Lékéni River
Outdoor & Adventure, Off the Beaten, Nature & Wildlife
The Congo Basin is home to one of Africa’s most diverse primate populations and the world’s highest known concentration of gorillas. Often preferring a flatter habitat, the lowland gorillas are typically smaller in size than the mountain gorillas of Rwanda and Uganda, but their healthy population in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park with limited amount of permit issued per day allows for a more intimate encounter with these gentle giants.
Note: Due to logistics involving charter flights, this touring is conducted on a shared basis. The date of departure from Brazzaville to Mboko airstrip is to be on Monday or Thursday.
Upon arrival, you will be transferred from the airport to your accommodation.
This morning is free at leisure for you to rest or enjoy hotel facilities.
After lunch at a riverside restaurant, we will explore the Poto-Poto Textile Market and Painting School, Marché Plateau Ville, St. Anne’s Basilica, and Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Memorial. Conclude with a drink overlooking the Congo rapids, followed by a sunset drive along La Corniche and the Independence Bridge.
You will be transferred from the accommodation to the airport.
Board your private flight from Brazaville to Mboko airstrip in Odzala-Kokoua National Park. The flight departs 1pm on every Mondays and Thursdays, taking approximately 2 hours.
On arrival at the airstrip, you will be driven approximately 2-3 hours through the national park’s savanna and rainforest into your lodge. This evening, join us around the fire for a conservation and gorilla track briefing, building up your anticipation for the unforgettable encounter.
Ndzehi Concession is the focal point for world-class primate research. The team here had spent the past few decades navigating the trails and rhythms of the lowland gorillas. You will enjoy guided forest walks in search of these gentle giants. Compared to the mountain gorillas, the lowland gorillas have a higher fruit consumption in their diet, allowing them to be more active and making your experience of witnessing these adorable creatures a lot more dynamic as you navigate an easier, flatter terrain.
This area is also home to interesting primates such as galago, moustached monkey and the elusive crowned monkey. Other wildlife includes palm civet, forest duiker, black-casqued wattled hornbill, tree frog and the rare great blue turaco.
After breakfast, enjoy one last venture into the pristine rainforest of the Ndzehi Concession before you bid adieu.
You will be transferred from Ndzehi Concession into the Lékéni River, where you will set off on a kayak for 30-60 minutes and continue by foot for 30-60 minutes towards the Lango Bai (depending on the water levels).
Lango Bai offers an arresting backdrop as you put on your walking shoes to trace the forest elephant trails through the streams and bai. Your guide will share insights into the delicate ecosystem in this biome.
Primates that call Lango Bai home include the black and white (guereza) colobus monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey monkey, putty-nosed monkey and the elusive de brazza’s monkey. Lango Bai is also home to the elusive forest elephant, spotted hyena, bongo and red river hog. Other potential wildlife you may spot include the forest buffalo, harnessed bushbuck, western sitatunga, African gray parrot and green pigeon.
As the dawn breaks, you will enjoy another early morning walking safari before you depart from the lodge.
Hop on the vehicle for a game drive transfer for approximately 2-3 hours to Lékéni River. Lékéni River is set at a distinctive biome where the forest meets the savanna, so keep your eyes peeled for interesting wildlife that you may chance to come across during the transfer.
After lunch, you may relax on the river deck or enjoy a forest walk before you embark on your afternoon cruise.
Board your river cruise through the network of waterways surrounding the savannas, keeping your anticipation high as every bend of the river may potentially reveal a new scene. Primates that call Lékéni River home include the black and white (guereza) colobus monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey monkey, putty-nosed monkey, as well as the elusive de brazza’s monkey and chimpanzee! Lékéni River is also home to the elusive forest elephant, spotted hyena, bongo, hippo, as well as slender-snouted crocodile and dwarf crocodile. Other potential wildlife you may spot include the forest buffalo, harnessed bushbuck, western sitatunga, as well as diverse bird life.
Alongside your guide, you will explore the riverbanks and forests in search on the local wildlife. Activities offered may be a combination of walking, boating and kayaking safari through Congo Basin’s most picturesque habitats. In between the safari, you may relax on the river deck and keep your eyes peeled for birds, butterflies and monkeys passing by the camp.
