Hulunbuir is located in the northernmost part of Inner Mongolia, bordering Russia and Mongolia in the west. Here, you can appreciate the primitive and ancient nature, as well as the exotic customs of the Sino-Russian and Sino-Mongolian borders.

This trip traverses through the boundless grasslands of Inner Mongolia and the jungles of the Greater Khingan Mountains. DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 01 Arrival in Hailar / Jinzhanghan / Muyun Peak

Arriving in Hailar Airport, we drive 40km/1h to Jinzhanghan, located on the Bank of Morgele River, which depicts the scenes of Genghis Khan walking in tents. Experience the ceremony of dismount wine, a Mongolian etiquette in welcoming guests. Participate in Festival OBO, a Mongolian sacrificial activity which has circulated for over a thousand years. Enjoy the Morgler River view, which is known as “the first meander water in the world”.

Then, we transfer another 20km/30m into your exotic accommodation in the Muyun Hilltop Hotel. It is recommended to participate in the hotel’s nomadic activities (paid separately), which replicates the real-life nomads’ lives based on nature, love of grassland and ecological protection.

Day 02 Muyun Peak / Erguna / Genhe

Drive 200km/1 day across the grassland of galloping horses, Haji and Qiyi before arriving Asia’s #1 wetland: Ergun Wetland (1.5h visit) at the northern end of the Hulunbuir grassland. Experience traditional Russian bread DIY and visit the Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe, known as the “last hunting tribe in China” famed for its simple folk customs and mysterious “Reindeer Culture” amidst the forests of Greater Xing’an Mountains. After the tour, we drive to Genhe.

 

Day 03 Genhe / Taiping Ancient Town / Shiwei

We drive 320km/3.5h to Taiping ancient town, a forest farm with century-old Taiping house built by Japanese orphans. Continue 60km/1.5h to Shiwei, stop at Eagle Mouth and Moon Pao before hotel check-in. Shiwei is a gathering place of Russian and Chinese Russian descendants whom still retained Russian culture and living customs. In the evening, you can enjoy sunset in shenxianpo and take a scenic cruise boat on the Erguna River in Shiwei to adore a panoramic view of a nearby Russian village.

Day 04 Shiwei / Enhe / Heishantou

Rise early for sunrise on Ergun River, with morning fog engulfing the quiet Russian town. After breakfast, you can see the Shiwei Friendship Bridge from afar. The first permanent bridge between China and Russia has an annual cargo of 20,000 tons. Drive 100km/2h to Ulan Mountain Tai Chi Bay with its unique Sino-Russian Qatar line landscape, similar to Taiji Eight Diagrams from high altitude. Continue 170km/2.5h to Enhe Russian Ethnic Township, China’s only Russian ethnic township to experience their unique cultural heritage.

Day 05 Heishantou / Hulun Lake / Manzhouli

Take a wooden plank walk through Lev Wetland Manor. See the Lion Bay named after the Gulf Stream and the Leo-like symbol, the Taptou Ping which was formed for thousands of years, the Shamina Bridge and the landscape platform. Visit the nomad homes for activities such as goat-milking, lamb-feeding, horse-riding, archery and wearing Mongolian costumes. Drive across beautiful grassland with a stop at 186 Ribbon River at the bank of Erguna River facing Duroy, the largest village bordering the Russian Baikal.

Choose from one of the following included activities:

  • Option A: Grass Skiing. Feel the rush of the wind across the longest grass slide in Hulunbuir.
  • Option B: Horseback Riding. See the prairie’s vast beauty at the hometown of horseback people.
  • Option C: Grassland Swing. A high-altitude swing with fantastic view, in the depths of the prairie.

In the afternoon, we drive 210km/3.5h to Manzhouli, a border port city where Chinese and Western cultures blend. Visit Matryoshka Plaza, a large-scale Russian park, including Matryoshka World, Fun Zone, Matryoshka Theater, Russian Folklore Experience Hall, Russian-Mongolian Performing Arts Theater and Xtreme Paradise. Visit the Gothic-styled Manzhouli Wedding Palace and join a Matryoshka DIY workshop.

In the evening, you can walk to the Sino-Russian commercial pedestrian street. Brightly lit at night, you can purchase Chinese and Russian specialties.

Day 06 Departure from Manzhouli

Start at Manzhouli National Gate, comprising of National Gate, No. 41 Boundary Monument, Red Tourism Exhibition Hall, Six Exhibition Halls of the Communist Party of China and Manzhouli Red Secret Communication Line relics. After that, visit Zalainuoer Museum to learn about Zalainuoer civilization and culture. Drive 38km/45m to Hulun Lake, Inner Mongolia’s largest lake set in the west of Hulunbuir grassland. The rest is free time before transferring to the airport for your flight home.
