The Arctic region is located in the northern hemisphere and is characterized by its unique climate, geography, and wildlife. The Arctic Circle encompasses the area above 66.5 degrees latitude, which includes parts of eight countries: Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the United States (Alaska), Canada, Greenland and Iceland. The Arctic is known for its harsh climate, which is characterized by long winters with extremely cold temperatures and short summers with limited sunlight. Despite its harsh climate, the region is home to more than 21,000 known species of highly cold-adapted mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates, plants and fungi and microbes including reindeer, arctic foxes, polar bears and whales.
