BUENOS AIRES, JUJUY, TILCARA, HUMAHUACA, ATACAMA, SILOLI DESERT, UYUNI, LA PAZ
Stretching the length of South America, the Andes reveal a mesmerizing tapestry of landscapes – each more arresting than the last. Discovering Buenos Aires
Begin your introduction to Buenos Aires with a guided city tour through its most iconic neighborhoods. Often called the “Paris of South America,” the city’s European elegance is evident in its grand boulevards, neoclassical architecture, and historic plazas. Start at the storied Plaza de Mayo, continue through the cobbled streets of San Telmo, one of the city’s oldest quarters, before arriving in the vibrant La Boca district – famous for its colorful houses and bohemian energy.
In the evening, immerse yourself in the passion and elegance of Argentine tango. Enjoy a dinner and a world-class performance to capture the soul of porteño culture.
Transfer to airport for Jujuy
After breakfast, you will be transferred to airport. Depart Buenos Aires and fly to the northwest, landing in the Andean city of Jujuy.
Arrival in Humahuaca Gorge
Upon arrival in Jujuy airport, continue by road through stunning mountain landscapes to visit Purmamarca and Tilcara, charming towns in the UNESCO-listed Humahuaca Gorge.
The pre-Hispanic village of Purmamarca is definite postcard material with its red roads, adobe houses, and the Cerro de Los Siete Colores (Hill of the Seven Colors) as its backdrop. You will be able to witness the brilliant red, pink, gold, and green colors of this incredible rock formation. Proceed to Tilcara, a lovely town at 2564 m above sea level, which you will check in your hotel and rest for the night.
Explore the Humahuaca Gorge
Set out on a full-day exploration of the Humahuaca Valley, known for its vibrant Andean culture and dramatic scenery. A ridiculous feast for the eyes, this multicolored valley and UNESCO World Heritage Site runs for 96 miles (155 km) along the Rio Grande and north into Bolivia. Once part of the ancient Inca trails, there are lots of interesting historical sites and geographic formations on this route. You will see the ever-changing layers of sediment and new colors at every turn. Highlights include the village of Uquía, the hill of Fourteen Colors (Hornocal), and the archaeological site of Pucará de Tilcara.
Journey to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Cross into Chile by road, arriving in the high-altitude oasis of San Pedro de Atacama. The journey will take about 8 hours with plenty of stops. Settle into your all-inclusive desert lodge after a long day.
Explore the otherworldly Atacama
Surrounded by sculpted valleys, endless salt flats, and steaming volcanoes, San Pedro de Atacama invites a profound encounter with nature in its rawest form. This oasis town, cradled in the high desert, opens the door to some of South America’s most astonishing and varied landscapes. With radiant skies, rich indigenous heritage, and an unmistakable stillness, Atacama captivates both the eye and spirit. Spend the day uncovering its distinctive terrain, with experiences tailored to the day’s conditions and your own pace of discovery.
As night falls, the Atacama reveals one of its greatest wonders: the sky. Thanks to its high altitude, dry climate, and near-zero light pollution, this region offers some of the clearest night skies on Earth. Join a specialist-led Astronomical Tour, carefully timed to coincide with the new moon and optimal dark-sky conditions. You’ll witness constellations, planets, and distant galaxies in stunning detail – an unforgettable celestial experience unique to this remarkable desert. (Weather permitting)
Into the Heart of Atacama
Continue your journey through the striking contrasts of the Atacama. Travel by vehicle across wind-sculpted plains and salt-rimmed basins, where shimmering lakes and silent volcanoes define the horizon.
A visit to the Valley of the Moon offers a true highlight. Shaped by centuries of erosion and devoid of vegetation, its raw, rugged beauty evokes the surface of a distant planet. Some parts of this valley have not seen a drop of rain in over a hundred years, making it one of the driest and most hauntingly beautiful places on earth.
Overland to Bolivia’s Surreal South
Transfer to the Bolivian border and begin your overland journey through the magnificent landscapes of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve. Visit surreal sites such as Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon), the Salvador Dalí Desert, geysers, and the striking red waters of Laguna Colorada before reaching your rustic desert lodge.
Across High-Andean Landscapes
Continue your overland journey through Bolivia’s remote southern highlands, a region of striking elevation, intense silence, and surreal beauty. Travel past a string of mineral-rich lakes -where flamingos wade in vividly colored waters, framed by snow-dusted peaks. Along the way, encounter wind-sculpted rock formations, ancient lava flows, and expansive desert plateaus that stretch toward the horizon. After visiting the haunting train cemetery near Uyuni, arrive in Colchani, on the edge of the legendary salt flats
Uyuni Salt Flats
Today is dedicated to one of Bolivia’s most iconic wonders – the Uyuni Salt Flats, the world’s largest and most spectacular salt desert. Stretching over 10,000 square kilometers, this dazzling white expanse was once an ancient lakebed and now forms an otherworldly canvas of hexagonal salt patterns, mirror-like reflections, and boundless horizons.
Depending on seasonal conditions, Uyuni reveals two very different but equally breathtaking faces. In the rainy season of March, a thin layer of water covers the flats, the surface transforms into a giant sky-reflecting mirror, creating an ethereal, dreamlike world. If the water level permits, we may have a chance to enter the Incahuasi Island to see the gigantic cacti on top of the remains of an ancient volcano. (Today’s visit depends on weather conditions, subject to change)
Transfer to airport for La Paz
Transfer to Uyuni Airport for your flight to Bolivia’s high-altitude capital, La Paz.
Explore La Paz
La Paz stuns with dramatic mountain vistas, vibrant markets, and rich indigenous and colonial heritage. Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s colonial-era squares, colorful neighbourhood, bustling markets, and take a scenic cable car ride to admire the panoramic views.
Day trip to Tiwanaku
Embark on a day tour from La Paz to the ancient site of Tiwanaku, often regarded as the cradle of Andean civilization. Located about 1.5 hours away on the Altiplano, Tiwanaku impresses with its monumental ruins and remarkably precise stonework that hint at a highly advanced pre-Columbian culture. Explore the archaeological complex and its museum, gaining insight into the cosmology, artistry, and ceremonial traditions of the Tiwanaku people.
Departure from La Paz
Transfer to the airport for your international departure. Take with you the unforgettable memories of the Andes’ diverse landscapes and cultures.
