Arrival in Taiyuan
Upon arriving at Taiyuan Airport, transfer to the hotel for check-in. Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi Province and an important gateway to the culture of the Three Jin region. Spend this evening resting at the hotel, recharging your energy for the exciting journey ahead.

Museum and Ancient Temple Tour
Visit the Shanxi Provincial Museum, whose rich collections — spanning bronze ware, murals, Buddhist sculptures, and artistic artefacts from successive dynasties — systematically showcase Shanxi’s profound historical legacy as a heartland of Chinese civilisation.
Afterwards, visit one of Taiyuan’s most iconic historical landmarks — the Twin Pagoda Temple (Shuangta Temple). Famous for its two soaring pagodas standing side by side, it fully embodies the grandeur and elegance of Ming dynasty Buddhist temple architecture.

Jin Merchant Manors
Visit the Chang Family Manor, the ancestral residence of the Chang clan — a prominent Jin merchant family. Built during the Qing dynasty, the estate was vast at its peak, blending the layout of a grand northern residence with traditional garden artistry. Every corner reflects the ritual propriety, distinguished lineage, and refined aesthetic of a prosperous merchant family of the time.
Next, visit Zhenguo Temple, founded during the Five Dynasties period. Its ancient architecture and polychrome sculpture art are of exceptional historical value. The Wanfo Hall (Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas), built during the Tianhui reign of the Northern Han state, is one of the earliest surviving timber-framed structures in China, making it a treasure of immense artistic and scholarly significance. After the visit, head to Pingyao and check in to a characterful traditional inn, soaking in the timeless atmosphere of this ancient city.

Pingyao Ancient City
Spend a full day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pingyao Ancient City, including the ancient city walls, the Ming and Qing Dynasty Street, the Rishengchang Draft Bank, the Tongxing Gong Escort Agency, the City God Temple, and the County Government Office. Pingyao is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in China, where its streets, draft banks, official buildings and temples together paint a vivid picture of the former prosperity of Jin merchants and the everyday life of an ancient city.
In the evening, a special arrangement has been made to watch the large-scale immersive theatrical production Again in Pingyao, which brings to life the spirit of the merchant road and the deep sense of home and country through an immersive storytelling experience — a truly unforgettable way to spend a night in the ancient city.

Onwards to the Buddhist Kingdom
Travel by coach to Wutai Mountain, stopping en route to visit Jinci Temple. Jinci is one of China’s most celebrated ancient ancestral temple and garden complexes, renowned for its Hall of the Holy Mother, the Fish Pond Flying Bridge, and ancient trees over a thousand years old — a magnificent embodiment of the beauty of Chinese classical architecture.
Continue onwards to Wutai Mountain, one of China’s Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and the traditional sanctuary of Manjushri Bodhisattva. The mountain is home to numerous temples, and its atmosphere of serenity and solemnity naturally inspires reverence in all who visit.

Pilgrimage Through the Wutai Mountain
Spend a full day visiting the temples of Wutai Mountain, including the Five Emperors Temple (Wuye Miao), Xiantong Temple and Tayuan Temple. Each temple has its own distinct character — some are thriving centres of popular devotion, while others are historically significant Buddhist monasteries of grand architectural stature — together forming the rich and solemn religious and cultural landscape that defines Wutai Mountain. Strolling among them, you will not only feel the tranquil and sacred atmosphere of this revered Buddhist mountain, but also appreciate the unique harmony of ancient temple architecture, Buddhist stupas, and mountain scenery blending seamlessly into one.

Ancient Architectural Wonders of the Ages
Today, drive towards Datong with a stop at the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. This world-renowned ancient timber tower is one of the tallest and oldest purely wooden multi-storey pagodas surviving in China. Having withstood a thousand years of the elements, it stands as a true marvel of ancient Chinese architecture.
Next, visit the Hanging Temple, built directly into a sheer cliff face. Suspended dramatically in mid-air and following the contours of the mountain, it combines architectural ingenuity with religious and cultural significance, making it one of the most breathtaking ancient temples in China. Afterwards, continue to Datong and check in to the hotel.

The Splendour of the Grottoes
Begin with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Yungang Grottoes, carved during the Northern Wei dynasty into a cliff face stretching approximately one kilometre. With 45 major caves and over 59,000 statues of varying sizes, the grottoes are widely recognised as one of the supreme masterpieces of Chinese Buddhist grotto art, vividly marking the pivotal transition from Western Region influences to a distinctly local style.
Afterwards, visit Huayan Temple — one of Datong’s finest surviving Liao and Jin dynasty complexes — and the ancient city walls, which together trace the weighty history and grandeur of this great northern city.

Farewell to the Ancient City
Today, a private transfer will take you to the high-speed rail station, where you will board a high-speed train to Beijing to connect with your return flight home — bringing to a close a journey filled with extraordinary ancient architecture, Buddhist art, and the timeless culture of the Jin lands.
