South Africa- the world in one country- is the adventure capital of the world. Besides the wildlife, Africa also prides itself with producing one of the world’s finest wines and being the largest producer of gold.

The major travel spot in South Africa is the Kruger National Park. Covering over 2 million hectares of wilderness, Kruger is the largest game reserve in the country. Kruger offers more exclusive game viewing, day or night, with paths off the main road to have closer view of the animals.

The long stretch of forested coastline and white beaches, freshwater lakes, large trees, and deep gorges make up the obvious beauty that is Garden Route. With its multi-faceted landscape, travelers can either revel in paragliding to see the ocean, the dolphins and the whales, or brave the waves and surf the supertubes! For extreme sports, jump 216 meters from the Bloukrans River Bridge to an exhilarating bungee.

A welcome respite from all the adventure of South Africa is the capital, Cape Town. Known as the “Mother City”, because it allegedly takes 9 months for things to happen, the city showcases the unhurried life of Capetonians. The landscape- with white sandy beaches and vineyards- is highlighted by Table Mountain where tourists may take the cable car up the mountain and see Cape Town at their feet from the summit. For a historical touch, visit the old prison of political prisoners from the apartheid era at Robben Island. This famous prison also held captive the present notable leader, Nelson Mandela.

Best Time to Visit

South Africa can be easily visited throughout the year. Located in the southern hemisphere, spring (Sep to Oct) and autumn (Mar to Apr) are considered by most to be the best time to visit, when temperature hovers around average of 22°C. During spring, the west coast of South Africa is carpeted with the blooming of the wildflowers.

Winter (May to Aug) is a good month for game viewing, as the foliage is less dense. Cape Town tends to get occasional winter rainfall, although there can be days of sunshine.

July to Nov is good for sightings of the southern right whales as they migrate to Cape’s southern point.
