Naples Discovery
Upon arrival, we will first visit Pio Monte della Misericordia which preserves countless works of art, including Caravaggio’s The Seven Works of Mercy. Then explore the Naples National Archaeological Museum. It is one of the world’s largest archaeological museums, particularly renowned for its collection of Roman antiquities.
Pompeii Excursion
Head for an excursion to UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Pompeii. It was an ancient Roman city near Naples that was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. However, it is extremely well-preserved and offers a snapshot of Roman life, frozen at the moment it was buried.
Naples City and Its Underground
Proceed for a tour of Naples, the third largest city of Italy, including a Naples underground tour. It is possible to see different underground sites like the Subterranean Naples, different large catacombs and the archaeological excavations. We will also visit Capodimonte Museum (Museo di Capodimonte), the largest and richest art gallery in the Southern Italy. At the museum, you can see the masterpieces by a list of great Italian painters like Michelangelo, Raphael and Caravaggio etc.
Journey from Naples to Paestum
We will drive about 1.5 hours from Naples to Paestum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was a significant ancient Greek settlement and renowned for the three world’s best preserved ancient Greek temples – Temple of Neptune, Temple of Athena and Temple of Hera (Basilica).
Castelmezzano Mountain Villages
Next, a 2 hours’ drive takes us to discover the two mountaintop villages in Castelmezzano, one of Italy’s most theatrical sites. Set against Lucanian Dolomites with rock formations, the scenic setting makes for an incredible stroll as you explore the old town.
Thereafter, we will drive about 1.5 hours to Matera for your accommodation.
Matera the Charming Ancient City
Set out for an in-depth visit of this unique and ancient city of Matera. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was developed among scenic surroundings and the rocks overlooking a deep ravine. Visit of the old town with its most characteristic districts, the “Sassi”, carved into the rock.
Craco – Tour the Abandoned Town
After lunch, embark on 1-hour drive to the atmospheric abandoned old town of Craco. The abandonment has even made Craco a popular filming location, a few famous movies being The Passion of the Christ, Quantum of Solace as well as Wonder Woman.
Then, return to Matera.
Cave Church Private Dining
Enjoy a spectacular dining experience in a truly memorable location: a stunning cave church with beautiful high arched ceilings carved out of the rock and amazing acoustics.
The Gorgeous Galatina
Today, drive about 2.5 hours to the stunning town of Galatina for the guided tour of Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most outstanding monuments of Romanesque and Gothic art in Apulia. The numerous frescoes, practically extended everywhere, contributed to the fame of the Basilica. The frescos depict biblical stories, including the life and passion of Christ and martyrdom of Santa Caterina. You will also get to learn more about the legend of the tarantella dance, renowned throughout the Salento province.
Lecce Walking Tour
Proceed for a tour of Lecce. Visit the magnificent cathedral with its 70 meters high campanile, the Basilica of Santa Croce (the best example of Baroque style in Italy), Piazza Sant’Oronzo where the Via Appia ends and the Roman amphitheatre. Be sure to try some “pasticiototto leccese“!
Alto Salento Hike with Picnic Lunch
Puglia is blessed with beautiful landscape, history and natural produce and on this hike you can gain a first-hand experience of all three. Drive about 1 hour to the start point of the hike (estimate: 2 hrs). Hike past the site we’ll see the sweeping olive plains extending all the way to the coast.
For lunch, enjoy a delicious picnic in a picturesque location, shaded by a grand old olive tree where you can relax after your hike and taste some of the simple delicacies for which the area is famous. To quench your thirst, a vintage “ape calessino” or tuk-tuk will magically appear in our country location to cater for all your wine and beverage needs. A truly unforgettable feast!
Ostuni Walking Tour with Olive Oil Tasting
Travel to the magical “white city” of Ostuni and embark on a guided walking tour of the city’s Old Town to admire its signature whitewashed architecture, aristocratic palazzos and ancient fortified walls. Some sights to be visited include Duomo and Palzzo Vescovile.
After that, we will enjoy a tasting of olive oil and typical local products (taralli & almond). Get the opportunity to see how the olive oil is produced in one of the best historical Masseria of the area.
Itria Valley Excursion – Alberobello, Locorotondo & Martina Franca
Today, you are off to discover the secrets of cheese making in the ancient traditions of Puglia. Meet a local cheese artisan and learn about the art of making fresh burrata and get to try your hand at twisting the knots of the mozzarella!
Next we go in search of Puglia’s famous trulli houses. These cone shaped dwellings are unique to the region and in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Alberobello, you will get to see a concentration of over 1,000 trulli houses.
Afterwards, transfer to Locorotondo and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the atmospheric alleyways bedecked with geraniums and citrus plants, with external stone staircases and beautiful balconies that can be found around just about every corner. Be charmed by the old town of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, and Palazzo Morelli, a wonderful example of Baroque architecture.
Dinner at Traditional Masseria
This evening, converge at a traditional masseria and enjoy a unique dinner in the style of a local village festival, with stalls serving a wide range of yummy local produce.
Monopoli and Polignano a Mare Coastal Towns Exploration
This morning, set out to the charming fishing village of Monopoli to visit the impressive castle of Emperor Charles V and the panoramic sea walls surrounding the historic center. Explore the historic center to see some of the unique churches before proceeding to Polignano a Mare and enjoy a walking tour through the lovely coastal town.
Castellana Grotte
Drive to Castellana Grotte, one of the largest network of caves in Europe. The massive caves were created by the underground rivers which filter down through the limestone soil of the Murge hills. Embark on a private guided tour of the caves to see the thousands of huge, coloured stalactites and stalagmites. This grand spectacle reaches a climax at the White Cave, which glistens with calcite crystals.
Transfer: Castellana Grotte to Bari Airport
Transfer to Bari International Airport which is about 1 hour’s drive for your onward journey.
