Akagera NP & Volcanoes NP
Nature & Wildlife
This week-long luxury safari adventure will take you deep into Rwanda mountain and jungle for an epic wildlife encounter. We first explore Akaegera, Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and the last refuge for savannah-adapted species in the country. Continue to Volcanoes NP – home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas and come face to face with these gentle giants.
This trip can be a perfect add-on after your Kenya or Tanzania safari or a trip to Africa in its own right!
Arriving into Kigali, we drive about 20mins to the city and check into your hotel.
If time permits, enjoy a tour of Kigali. A relatively young city, Kigali is low key yet dynamic and progressive and no visit to Rwanda would be complete without a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about her sombre past.
Begin your day very early in the morning with a 3h30mins shuttle transfer to Akagera NP gate followed by an hour game drive transfer to arrive at your lodge.
Stretching across a vast expanse of low-lying mountains and some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa, Akagera is teeming with plain games and is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, some very large crocodiles and more than 520 bird species. After settling into your tent and enjoyed a sumptuous lunch, follow your expert guide for your afternoon game drive which extends into an exhilarating night drive, offering the opportunity to observe the nocturnal animals.
Enjoy a full day of classic East African safari activities with amazing animal sightings and boat cruise. View the water birds and many other aquatic animals seen around Lake Rwayakazinga and try your hand at fishing too! (catch and release basis)
Wake up feeling fresh and excited for another morning game drive and lunch before you are transferred to the helipad for your 20mins scheduled helicopter flight to Kigali (10kgs luggage allowance in soft duffle).
We continue by road for about 3 hours to arrive at Volcanoes NP – your final stop on this trip. The Volcanoes NP is best known as a sanctuary for the mountain gorillas. Visitors flock here to experience a face to face encounter with these intriguing creatures. The park is set high on the jungle-covered slopes of the volcanic Virunga Mountains and highly regulated treks through the reserve allow visitors to spend an hour at a time with these incredible primates in their natural habitat.
Today is THE day where you follow in the footsteps of the rare and endangered mountain gorillas! After an early morning light breakfast, you will drive to the park HQ for briefing and be assigned the gorilla family you will track. Trekking through the forest, your experienced trackers will bring you up close to your gorilla family for a sensational hour of observing the great apes in their natural habitat.
We return to your lodge in the afternoon and you have the afternoon at leisure to relax after the unforgettable morning experience or taking part in the activities available at your lodge.
Depending on your departure flight, you may wish to consider spending your morning to track the equally rare Golden Monkey (at additional cost). We check out from your lodge and drive about 3hours to Kigali airport for your homebound flight.
