Why Hike the Kumano Kodō Trail in Japan?

The Kumano Kodō hikes Japan is known for for are not merely treks through nature, but a spiritual voyage through centuries of faith, folklore, and tradition. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Japan, this ancient pilgrimage trail was once walked by emperors, monks, and commoners seeking purification and enlightenment in the remote mountains of the Kii Peninsula. Today, the sacred journey continues, offering a meditative escape from the pace of modern life.

Two of the most storied routes await you. The Nakahechi route, known as the "Imperial Route", has been the favoured path for the aristocracy since the Heian period. Its well-marked trails wind through villages, cedar forests, and moss-laden shrines. Meanwhile, the Kohechi route cuts across the mountainous heart of the peninsula, once connecting Koyasan’s monastic centre to the Kumano shrines, a demanding but deeply rewarding path walked by monks in search of solitude.

Beyond its historical significance, what makes the Kumano Kodō truly special is the quiet, contemplative rhythm it offers. This is slow travel at its finest—a deliberate, unhurried pace that invites you to listen to the rustle of leaves, pause at age-old torii gates, and savour the silence between footsteps. For those drawn to a luxury hiking experience in Japan, it is not just about where you walk, but how the journey transforms you.

Trek an ancient pilgrimage trail that has been traversed by Japanese pilgrims from all walks of life for over a thousand years through the stunning Wakayama spiritual countryside.

In this itinerary, you’ll immerse yourself in atmospheric hikes, gain insight into sacred Shinto shrines and religion, and enjoy breathtaking landscapes as you explore the most impressive sections of the Kumano Kodo trail that we have carefully handpicked. Begin with an option to stay at an authentic temple at Mount Koya and end with an idyllic oceanside retreat at the Ise Peninsula.
