Rekjavik, Snaefellsnes, Thingvellir & Jokulsarlon
Family Travel, Winter Wonderland
Iceland enjoys milder winters than most other destinations in similar latitude – due to the warming effects of the North Atlantic Current!
Ideal from mid-December to March, this soft-adventure itinerary is perfect for active explorers. Travel from the mystical West coast of outstanding beauty and go in search for the Killer Whales that frequent the bay. Base yourself in a countryside lodge far from light pollution to catch the Aurora Borealis.
We take you through incredible ice caves and stunning glacier scenery —a true photographers’ dream.
Upon arrival at Keflavik International Airport, you will be picked up by private guide and transfer to Reykjavik. Visit Reykjavik’s spectacular coastline and harbour area including Harpa, Höfdi house (site of the “end of the cold war” meeting in 1986) and The Pearl. We also visit Reykjavik’s colourful old quarter with its quaint wooden houses and narrow streets. You will check into your hotel after the tour.
Explore the magical north Snæfellsnes Peninsula, home of Snæfellsjökull glacier and fascinating geological history, famously featured in Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth”. Visit Grundarfjörður, a charming village with stunning views of the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, as well as the stunning waterfalls of Grundarfoss and Kirkjufellsfoss. Travel through Hraunsfjörður and Kolgrafarfjörður fjords to the local fishing villages of Ólafsvík, Rif and Hellissandur. Experience orcas and whale watching next to the winter wonderland scenery of Mount Kirkjufell at Grundarfjordur.
Snæfellsjökull glacier is believed to be one of the seven main energy centres of the Earth and has inspired writers, poets and artists including Jules Vernes. The picturesque Arnarstapi is stunningfly full of caves and columnar basalt cliffs. Only ten minutes away, visit the tiny Hellnar village with the bewitching Baðstofa cave, famous for its peculiar luminosity and shading.
Your next stop is Djúpalónssandur black sand beach, where fishing operations once bloomed and the remains of a shipwrecked English trawler, Epine GY7, lie scattered on the beach as a monument to those who perished in the 1948 tragedy. These scenic coastal villages provide a fascinating insight into Iceland’s fishing heritage!
Hop on your 4WD 23km to Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO), the location of Iceland´s Parliament circa 930-1798 and one of the few places in the world where you can see the effects of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pulling apart. Next, we explore the Geysir hot spring and Gullfoss waterfalls. After lunch, go on a 1-hr guided snowmobile tour on Iceland’s second biggest glacier, Langjökull (on shared basis, includes warm glacier overalls, waterproof booties, gloves and helmets). Conclude at your hotel in Hvolsvollur town, where the aurora viewing condition is optimal.
After breakfast, we journey along the south coast. Stop at beautiful Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the waterfall. Continue with a 1-hour guided Mýrdalsjökull glacier walk (on shared basis; gear provided: crampons, ice-axe, belts, ropes, boots; with 30 min pre and 30 min post preparation and briefing). Enjoy lunch in the town of Vik, where we explore the black-sand beaches. On our way back to your hotel, we will stop at Skógafoss waterfall and Dyrhólaey promontory.
This is a unique day, especially for photographers. A short drive takes us to Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier and features various tongues flowing along steep mountainsides. Near Skaftafell area, we take a short glacier hike (if available) and walk in ice caves (join-in basis). For 2hrs, you will wonder in one or more blue ice caves, filled with magical lights. Head to Jökulsárlón Lagoon where huge, aqua-blue icebergs dot this mystical space, as immortalized in James Bond’s Die Another Day.
Optional Helicopter Ice Cave Tour: Fly over Skeiðarárjökull glacier, taking in panoramic views of Vatnajökull National Park’s sprawling network of glaciers. After landing on the glacier, take a short walk to the mouth of a secret ice cave where very few visitors have set foot on, taking in striking aquamarine hues and hearing more about the cave’s geography from your guide.
Your journey continues west, back along the south coast towards the Blue Lagoon. Make sightseeing stops along the way with your guide, exploring the beautiful natural landmarks that you bypassed on the drive east a couple of days ago. Expect towering volcanoes, vast lava fields, black sand beaches and breath-taking waterfalls!
Transfer to Keflavik Airport for your flight back home.
